contraceptives (for men)

from the utne reader: finally a contraceptive injection for men.
"The injection coats the vas with a gel that has a negative and positive electrical charge. As sperm cells, which also have electrical charges, pass by the gel, the opposite charge ruptures the cells' membranes."

Ow. The only invasive procedure that doctors routinely perform without anaesthetic is biopsy of the testes. Why? I naively asked my nurse friend. "Because the injection hurts as much as the op."

Couldn't they pick somewhere less painful to do it: like the guy sat next to me?
