summer reading

the idea that there are reading seasons is a little strange and almost certainly an invention of the book trade, but it is summer and summer means middle weight fiction

books for trains & planes:

the summer book, tove jansson
collection of themed stories by the writer of moomintroll back in print after years; thank god as some bastard nicked my copy. a strange haunting book of fragments of summers spent on a small island in the bay of finland by a small girl and her artist grandmother. in all those copyless years when the book was out of print most of it stayed with me.

lullaby, Chuck Palahniuk
him of fight club fame, for my money theres no better writer on the sheer horror and alienation of advanced capitalism, like bret easton ellis with moral fire.

ella minnow pea, mark dunn slender (in size only) swiftian fantasy about literalism and fundermentalism on an epistolary island.

more when i can be bothered.
